If you are Form 4 by now (or going to), I am pretty sure you must have gone through a lot of discussion and confusion in your head to choose one. But for some its just a piece of cake since they had heard a lot from their parents, relatives, teachers and friends that science is the best and will provide you a brighter future. Working in a field related to science will make you earn more and able to live a luxuries life. There is even a ideology within the society especially parents and teachers where students who takes 'A' and 'B' belongs to science meanwhile the rest should be in arts. Some even take it as a pride to be in science. I don't really get how do this idea makes sense!!! What is wrong with arts?What is so special about science?
Let me tell you a short story and its a true story guys. There was a friend of my mine and neighbour as well who was interested in arts and crafts. She is damn creative that she can turn a piece of paper into masterpiece. She was not that good neither in maths nor science. But thats not a big deal to me as I know one day she will become a DaVinci or a Picasso. As I assumed, she was given an art class but in a flash of an eyelid, her parents managed to get her in science class after going through some procedure. Imagine friends!!!! A girl who was not interested in basic science and modern maths has been asked to study BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS and ADD+++++MATHSS. If I was in her shoe, by now my brain had been burst into pieces and eaten by some worms.
But you know what, she accept her fate as cool as a cucumber. Did you wonder why her parents tend to do this to her although they are aware of her ability, creativity and interest? The answer is just obvious where they want to have this proud moment when they have a talk with their relatives on what stream she is in. As I mentioned in my previous blog, you can't expect DaVinci to find a formula E=M2 and Einstein to paint Monalisa. They are perfect in their own way. Both of them are equally needed to this world. Can you imagine a world without Arts? No dancers, painters, singers, and etc. Can you progress as a society without science? Absolutely NOOOO!!!!!
Okay, now lets discuss the reasons put forward by the majorities to defend their statement, "Science stream should be your first choice not arts"
a) Science provides you a better future
My answer:
Science doesn't provide you a better future but your passion, determination, hard work, smart work and self discipline. Did you think a person who studies in science but doesn't apply any of this thing in his life will succeed?
b) If you are in Science stream, you can earn more in future compare to those who are in art stream
My answer :
Hello people are you sleeping? Rajinikanth, Sharukhan, Justin Bieber, BTS members, Satoshi Nakamoto (fashion designer), Derek Hough (professional dancer), S. Shankar (film director), AR Rahman (music director) are earning more than a doctor and engineer.
c) Science recognise you as the smart one
My answer :
Everyone are smart in their own way. Its just depends on them whether they are using their left brain more or right brain more. People who use left brain tend to be more good in maths and science while those who use right side
more tend to be good in arts.
d) Science guarantee you a luxury life
My answer :
Nope again. Not all the doctors and engineers are living in a bunglo or a castle. They are still paying back loans for their cars, bikes, and house.
e) Jobs offer in science are wider than arts
My answer :
You need to do more research man!!!
f) There are more government jobs for science students compare to arts. You will get marry soon if you have a government job (indian ideology). You can enjoy pencen after you retire man.
My answer :
You are right that there are more government jobs for science students compare to arts. But its not a big deal because most of the time science students remain as an employee while art students will own a company (no matter big or small). If government employee enjoy pension, private employee will enjoy Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
Tips to choose a stream:
Follow your passion and interest.
Identify what you need, science or arts in order to achieve your dreams by doing some research.
If you don't know your interest and passion :
Track down your activities in your daily life.
Choose which one you are most active in.
Identity whether it is related to science or arts.
If you don't have any idea what you are interest in have a counselling session with your teacher.
